Why Can't I Stick to a Gym Routine?

Most people who can't stick to a gym routine think it's because they're lazy. That's not true — they most likely started wrong, went too hard too fast, burned out, missed a few sessions, then felt like they'd already failed. So they stopped. And then the whole cycle starts again the next time they have motivation.

The problem is that motivation got you started, but motivation isn't always there. It's high in week one when everything feels new and you're ready to change your life — but by week three it's gone. Work gets busy, the couch is looking comfortable, and it doesn't feel worth it anymore. Structure will do more for you than motivation ever did.

Why does having a plan actually matter?

Because when you don't have one, every time you go to the gym you have to make a bunch of decisions — and decisions are exhausting. When you already have a program, you just open the app and do what it says. No thinking, no negotiating with yourself. The decision is already made.

The other thing that changes everything is accountability. Most people will show up for others way better than they show up for themselves. When someone is checking in on you — a coach, a friend, a training partner — you perform better and show up differently. Because it matters to someone else, and that changes how much it matters to you.

The people I've coached who struggled most with consistency were the ones training alone with no structure. Every single time. And a lot of them weren't seeing results either — which made it even harder to keep going. If that sounds familiar, this post explains why results take longer than people expect.

The fix is simpler than you think: Get a program and someone to answer to. That's it. You don't need more willpower — you need less friction and more accountability.
